Mandy Burdette:Maybe after circle time is it play time and carlos tells maria he is scared and she tells him the english words for things since she knows more english
Christine:center time
Mandy Burdette:like a mini tour?
Mandy Burdette:yea
Stephanie Hicklin:sure, she can point out picture labels at each center
Melanie:I'm in Bookbuilder now to see if we can have a Spanish option.
Mandy Burdette:so.....Page Four: Ms. Smiley says, "it's time for centers." She tells Carlos that Maria will be his buddy for the day.
Mandy Burdette:????
Stephanie Hicklin:I know you can select the language for each coach and spanish is an option
Christine:sounds good mandy
Stephanie Hicklin:sounds good.
Stephanie Hicklin:we need to have some kind of conflict happen, then maria show him how to do better, then he is presented with the situation again and does the right thing
Stephanie Hicklin:does that make sense?
Christine:maybe he pushes someone
Mandy Burdette:also we could add...Carlos tells Maria he doesn't know how to ask to go to the bathroom?
Stephanie Hicklin:because he wants what they are playing with
Mandy Burdette:thats good.
Stephanie Hicklin:she tells him how to ask for the toy and wait his turn
Stephanie Hicklin:she can point out the pictures for bathroom, which are universal
Mandy Burdette:we could add to pg. 4....
Mandy Burdette:Carlos sees a toy he wants, but other children are playing with it
Stephanie Hicklin:block center?
Mandy Burdette:thats good
Mandy Burdette:legos?
Stephanie Hicklin:maybe big trucks would be easier to steal, haha
Christine:lol
Christine:i was thinking cars
Stephanie Hicklin:what do you call the center where they have the rug with the road map?
Christine:we call it blocks
Stephanie Hicklin:oh hah
Mandy Burdette:thats our lego center with trucks and cars
Stephanie Hicklin:can you tell i'm not early childhood??
Melanie:Just another thought..... sometimes the issue with children with developmental delays is that they only want to play by themselves and not interact
Stephanie Hicklin:yes...
Stephanie Hicklin:that was one of our original goals, i thought
Melanie:Maybe the other students want him to play and he won't play with them
Christine:so he pushes ..takes the truck and goes to play alone
Stephanie Hicklin:i like that
Melanie:right
Christine:maria helps him come back to the group
Mandy Burdette:Page 5: Carlos takes the truck from Stephen, and Stephen cries.?
Stephanie Hicklin:yes,
Mandy Burdette:Stephen starts to cry and Maria tells Carlos to be nice.
Stephanie Hicklin:help...I'm just typing
Mandy Burdette:maybe that can start pg 5. where she follows gim
Christine:ok....playing evaluator again....lets check our language and ensure it is early childhood
Melanie:Maybe she uses the word share
Stephanie Hicklin:not sure what you mean christine?
Christine:if someone is reading this story to kids...we need to make sure a 4 yr old could understand it
Mandy Burdette:Sharing is when you play together and take turns. ????
Stephanie Hicklin:oh i got you
Stephanie Hicklin:so is our audience a four year old or his parents?
Christine:thought it was a kid's book
Melanie:I thought 4 year old
Mandy Burdette:yea
Stephanie Hicklin:ok,
Stephanie Hicklin:after we put everything into bookbuilder will it tell us the age level?
Mandy Burdette:maybe we could add....Maria tells Carlos that sharing is when you play together and take turns. Maria and Carlos walk back over to Stephen. Maria tells Carlos how to say "i'm Sorry."
Mandy Burdette:we select it i think
Stephanie Hicklin:ok
Christine:I think we did ok until the last part....stephen started crying instead of what we have
Christine:or starts to cy
Melanie:I guess I'm thinking about a child who knows little to no English and when new words or concepts are introduced there should be some emphasis like when Carlos takes the toy away by himself. That's not sharing.
Christine:oops cry
Christine:cool
Christine:sets down and starts to cry....tense
Stephanie Hicklin:So how should we word it?
Christine:to stay the same...right?
Mandy Burdette:Pg. 5: Maria tells Carlos that sharing is when you play together and take turns. Maria and Carlos walk back over to Stephen. Maria tells Carlos how to say ''i'm Sorry.'' does that sounds ok?
Christine:sounds good
Stephanie Hicklin:better?
Christine:yep..thanks
Stephanie Hicklin::)
Christine:i like that mandy
Mandy Burdette:Pg. 6: After Center time, should we do lunch or recess?
Christine:lunch
Stephanie Hicklin:lunch then recess
Mandy Burdette:Pg. 6: After center time, Ms. Smiley takes the class to lunch.
Mandy Burdette:Carlos doesn't know how to tell Ms. Smiley he wants ketchup on his hot dog?!!? haha
Stephanie Hicklin:oh that's good
Stephanie Hicklin:is what I just added ok?
Mandy Burdette:yea!
Christine:yes
Melanie:I don't know how detailed you want to be but what about the class getting into a line to walk to the lunchroom?
Mandy Burdette:Pg 6: Ms Smiley takes the class to lunch. Carlos gets his favorite food, a hot dog. He doesn't know how to ask for ketchup so he points to the bottle. Maria says, "That's (ketchup in spanish)".
Mandy Burdette:i mean in english
Stephanie Hicklin:that's good
Mandy Burdette:and then maybe... Maria tells Carlos to say "please" when you want something because it is good manners.
Melanie:That's good
Mandy Burdette:pg.7....we could do lining up to go to recess melanie
Melanie:K
Christine:bathroom break before?
Stephanie Hicklin:Ok
Mandy Burdette:Ms. Smiley tells Carlos to get in line to go to recess. Carlos gets infront of all of his new friends.
Stephanie Hicklin:and because she already pointed out the signs, he knows where it is
Stephanie Hicklin:that's good mandy
Melanie:Maria shows him how to stand in line without touching other students/
Stephanie Hicklin:we could say, "Carlos remembered Maria showing him the boys bathroom symbol in their classroom, so he knew where to go.
Melanie:Or maybe that it's ok to stand it line with others?
Stephanie Hicklin:and then get out of the bathroom and go to the from of the line
Stephanie Hicklin:front sry
Mandy Burdette:so....Ms. Smiley tells Carlos to line up to go to the bathroom. Carlos gets in front of all of his new friends. Stephen pushes him out of the way. Maria reminds Carlos how to say "i'm sorry."
Stephanie Hicklin:just a thought...
Stephanie Hicklin:since this is his first day, should we have Ms. Smiley have flash cards with her through the day
Stephanie Hicklin:and hold them up when appropriate, like bathroom
Stephanie Hicklin:or playground
Christine:maybe she gives them to him at the end
Melanie:That would be a good idea
Mandy Burdette:i like that
Stephanie Hicklin:because we are throwing a lot of English at him on the first day
Stephanie Hicklin:So we can go back and add that part
Melanie:Maybe she has them throughout the day and let's him take them home to practice
Stephanie Hicklin:that's good
Stephanie Hicklin:the front can be english and the back spanish so mom can help
Melanie:good
Christine:is there a way to incorporate flash cards at the end of the book or link to an outside page
Melanie:i don't know
Stephanie Hicklin:that is a great idea
Stephanie Hicklin:did y'all see what I just added?
Stephanie Hicklin:page 3
Stephanie Hicklin:i'm sure we can figure it out mandy
Stephanie Hicklin:even if we make them a pdf and link to it
Melanie:That's good
Mandy Burdette:Pg. 8: After the bathroom break, Ms. Smiley takes the children out for recess.
Stephanie Hicklin:how about the kids are playing a group game and carlos is not interested
Mandy Burdette:Carlos runs and runs. He climbs all the way up the ladder but starts to cry because he is scared to go down the slide.
Mandy Burdette:Or Carlos follows Maria up the ladder.
Melanie:that works. And maybe Maria comes to help him down the slide
Mandy Burdette:or waits at the bottom and kind of coaches him
Christine:or stephen does
Stephanie Hicklin:yeah, i like stephen
Melanie:Both?
Mandy Burdette:yea because he needs to make friends with stephen
Mandy Burdette:Carlos runs and runs. He follows Maria up the ladder, and she slides down the big slide. Carlos starts to cry
Melanie:Stephanie I liked what you said about not playing with the group to begin with
Stephanie Hicklin:just thinking about the socialization part
Mandy Burdette:Stephen tells Carlos to be brave, and Carlos closes his eyes and slides down all by himself.
Mandy Burdette:Carlos could say "thank you (in spanish) amigo" and maria could say that means thank you friend in english
Mandy Burdette:that way he is learning to socialize and make new friends
Christine:sounds good
Melanie:that's good
Stephanie Hicklin:ok, and the three of them run off together to line up to go inside
Mandy Burdette:yea
Melanie:sweet
Stephanie Hicklin:how about this?
Stephanie Hicklin:Stephen asks Maria, "how do you say "you are welcome in spanish"
Stephanie Hicklin:She tells him, he says it to Carlos and Carlos smiles big
Mandy Burdette:i like that.....Maria tell Stephen "you're welcome in Spanish"
Christine:i like that
Melanie:that
Melanie:'sgood
Christine:do we need to split page 8 to 8/9...a lot of wording for one page
Melanie:Do they come back in for nap time, classwork or storytime?
Stephanie Hicklin:yes, probably haha
Stephanie Hicklin:Is that a good split?
Christine:yep
Melanie:Those changes look good
Mandy Burdette:pg. 10: The three new friends go back to the classroom for storytime.
Melanie:Carlos sits between MAria and Stephen
Mandy Burdette:Ms. Smiley reads Carlos' favorite story, "Brown Bear, Brown bear???" Carlos' mom reads it to him every night in Spanish, and Ms. Smiley reads it in English.
Stephanie Hicklin:that's good.
Mandy Burdette:After story time, Carlos' mom can come pick him up and ms. smiley can give him to flash cards to take home....he can say goodbye to his new friends
Melanie:That's good
Stephanie Hicklin:that sounds good.
Melanie:No nap? LOL
Stephanie Hicklin:1/2 day
Stephanie Hicklin:haha
Christine:lol...was typing that
Mandy Burdette:well 3k is usually half day
Melanie:yea:)
Stephanie Hicklin:is this wording ok?
Christine:looks good
Melanie:yes
Mandy Burdette:yea she can say thank you
Mandy Burdette:then Carlos can say bye maria and stephen! Adios?!
Mandy Burdette:Adios Amigos lol
Stephanie Hicklin:we were supposed to have 4 amigos...lol
Christine:lol
Melanie:i kept thinking that
Mandy Burdette:ill copy the dicussion notes and emial them to everyone.....stephanie can you email the chat?
Stephanie Hicklin:ok, I will.
Melanie:Thanks both of you
Christine:not bad...hour and a half and we have a book
Melanie:yep
Stephanie Hicklin:i am really please with this!
Melanie:What needs to be done next?
Stephanie Hicklin:pleased...
Mandy Burdette:how about we post the storyboard doc in wikispace and just all work on it throughout the week
Christine:i will get it translated this week and send it out
Stephanie Hicklin:that is good. i can keep working on graphics too.
Melanie:That's good
Mandy Burdette:we need all the graphics and spanish by next tues
Mandy Burdette:ill look for graphics too
Melanie:Do I need to keep working on graphics?
Stephanie Hicklin:i emailed asking that site for permission to use "carlos" and they said the "stole" it
Stephanie Hicklin:haha
Christine:lol
Mandy Burdette:yea whatever you find we can just post it in the storyboard doc. on wikispace
Stephanie Hicklin:ok
Melanie:k
Stephanie Hicklin:do we want clipart or photos?
Mandy Burdette:dont forget to post your time in the time log
Mandy Burdette:i say we do clipart/cartoon images
Stephanie Hicklin:me too, much easier to find too
Christine:me three
Melanie:I agree
Mandy Burdette:there are some examples of books where someone just drew them like in microsoft paint
Mandy Burdette:they turned out kind of cute....they were very simple with few images but looked good so that is an option if we cant find many images
Stephanie Hicklin:mine would be awful if I did that
Melanie:I found the ones I put in my powerpoint just googling
Mandy Burdette:yea i googled clipart images and there was a ton of stuff
Stephanie Hicklin:i get so nervous about using those without permission
Melanie:I checked most of mine and couldn't find who to get permission from
Mandy Burdette:clip art is copyright free correct?
Stephanie Hicklin:i know, that's why i get nervous. seems like i can never find that info on the good graphics
Christine:at the end if we reference the sites...we should be fine right?
Stephanie Hicklin:not all of it
Mandy Burdette:yea....we are actually supposed to include the references for graphics on each storyboard page
Stephanie Hicklin:it has to specify that, but like i said the best stuff has copyright or you have to buy it
Mandy Burdette:so are we meeting next mon @ 8?
Stephanie Hicklin:i guess, we just need to try to use "free" clipart and make sure we write down where we got it
Stephanie Hicklin:8 is good for me
Mandy Burdette:yea include it on the page you place it in on the storyboard
Stephanie Hicklin:ok
Melanie:That's fine
Mandy Burdette:i guess ill talk to you guys next week! have a good night and good luck with image searching everyone!
Stephanie Hicklin:i have one more question
Melanie:Good night!
Christine:ok
Melanie:?
Mandy Burdette:ok
Stephanie Hicklin:were we supposed to say what the coaches roles were going to be tonight?
Mandy Burdette:i think we will just use them to translate the english to spanish
Melanie:I agree
Christine:me too
Stephanie Hicklin:i saw a really good example in one of the model books where each time the first coach posed a question, the second gave a hint to the answer and the third gave the answer
Mandy Burdette:we will just use one so its not too confusing to the children
Stephanie Hicklin:ok
Stephanie Hicklin:just checking
Mandy Burdette:thata a good idea too
Mandy Burdette:we can add that in when we start developing if we want!
Stephanie Hicklin:it was consistent through the story and looked really good
Stephanie Hicklin:ok, sounds good
Stephanie Hicklin:sorry, just wanted to ask while we were all here
Melanie:That may be used as part of the assessment when we get to that point
Mandy Burdette:good idea
Stephanie Hicklin:ok, sorry! i know it is late, night everyone
